Etymology
From the Hebrew root בֹּעַז (Bo'az), possibly derived from בְּעֹז (be'oz) meaning "with strength," or related to the idea of swiftness/agility.
Commentary
Boaz was a wealthy landowner in Bethlehem, a kinsman of Naomi's late husband, Elimelech. He demonstrated great kindness and piety towards Ruth, a Moabitess, and ultimately redeemed her, marrying her and becoming an ancestor of King David and, through him, of Jesus.
