Commentary

17a γέγραπται δὲ αὐτὸν πάλιν ἀναστήσεσθαι μεθʼ ὧν ὁ κύριος ἀνίστησιν. 17b Οὗτος ἑρμηνεύεται ἐκ τῆς Συριακῆς βίβλου, ἐν μὲν γῇ κατοικῶν τῇ Αὐσίτιδι ἐπὶ τοῖς ὁρίοις τῆς Ἰδουμαίας καὶ Ἀραβίας· προυπῆρχεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὄνομα Ἰωβάβ. 17c λαβὼν δὲ γυναῖκα Ἀράβισσαν γεννᾷ υἱὸν ᾧ ὄνομα Ἐννών· ἦν δὲ αὐτὸς πατρὸς μὲν Ζάρε, ἐκ τῶν Ἠσαὺ υἱῶν υἱός, μητρὸς δὲ Βοσόρρας, ὥστε εἶναι αὐτὸν πέμπτον ἀπὸ Ἀβραάμ. 17d καὶ οὗτοι οἱ βασιλεῖς οἱ βασιλεύσαντες ἐν Ἐδώμ, ἧς καὶ αὐτὸς ἦρξεν χώρας· πρῶτος Βαλὰκ ὁ τοῦ Βεώρ, καὶ ὄνομα τῇ πόλει αὐτοῦ Δεννάβα· μετὰ δὲ Βαλὰκ Ἰωβὰβ ὁ καλούμενος Ἰώβ· μετὰ δὲ τοῦτον Ἁσὸμ ὁ ὑπάρχων ἡγεμὼν ἐκ τῆς Θαιμανείτιδος χώρας· μετὰ δὲ τοῦτον Ἁδὰδ υἱὸς Βαρὰδ ὁ ἐκκόψας Μαδιὰμ ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ Μωάβ, καὶ ὄνομα τῇ πόλει αὐτοῦ Γεθθάιμ. 17e οἱ δὲ ἐλθόντες πρὸς αὐτὸν φίλοι Ἐλειφὰς τῶν Ἠσαὺ υἱῶν, Θαιμανῶν βασιλεύς, Βαλδὰδ ὁ Σαυχαίων τύραννος, Σωφὰρ ὁ Μειναίων βασιλεύς. It is written that he will rise again with those whom the Lord raises. This is interpreted from the Syriac book: He lived in the land of Ausitis, on the borders of Idumaea and Arabia. His former name was Jobab. He took an Arabian wife and begot a son named Ennon. His father was Zare, a son of Esau's sons, and his mother was Bosorra, so that he was the fifth from Abraham. These are the kings who reigned in Edom, of which he also ruled a country: first Balak son of Beor, and the name of his city was Dennaba; after Balak, Jobab, who is called Job; after him, Hasom, who was a ruler from the land of Theman; after him, Hadad son of Barad, who struck down Midian in the plain of Moab, and the name of his city was Geththaim. The friends who came to him were Eliphaz, king of the Themanites, from the sons of Esau; Baldad, the tyrant of the Sauchaeans; Sophar, the king of the Meinaeans.
