Etymology
From the Hebrew verb שִׁית (shith), meaning "to set, place, appoint." Eve explains this meaning in Genesis 4:25.
Commentary
Seth was born to Adam and Eve after Cain slew Abel. Eve believed that God had "appointed" him as a replacement for Abel. He is a pivotal figure in the antediluvian genealogies, through whom the line of humanity continues after the first murder.
